The Swedish Hockey League (SHL) says Russia should not take part in international ice hockey championships and that Sweden should not play Russia at the World Championship. The statement follows a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that could allow Russian national teams to return to international tournaments.
SHL said it was strongly critical of the decision. “We are very disappointed by CAS’s decision. SHL’s position remains firm: Russia should not participate in international ice hockey championships, and we therefore believe Sweden should not play Russia at the World Championship,” said Roger Ekström, SHL chairman.
Ekström said SHL would promote its position in forums where it has influence and work for Swedish ice hockey to act clearly and collectively.
