Rauman Lukko’s 2021 championship team was built on trust between head coach Pekka Virta and captain Heikki Liedes, as well as clear routines that gave players responsibility for resolving issues among themselves. The pair discussed their relationship on the opening episode of the Meidän peli podcast.

Virta required players to arrive 15–30 minutes before the day’s programme to discuss good and bad matters as a group. Coaches were not allowed into those meetings. Liedes, who became captain during the title-winning season, said Virta gradually brought him into discussions about team matters and asked for his help with individual situations.

Liedes described Virta as a father figure who could give direct criticism but cared about helping players improve. Virta said the captain needed to bring players’ views to the coaching staff, while recognising that final decisions and responsibility rested with the coach.

The season also tested the group through pandemic restrictions and Virta’s serious illness. Liedes said the team maintained stricter precautions than required and found ways to spend time together away from hockey.
