Herning Blue Fox ended their Champions Hockey League campaign with a 4-3 home shootout win over playoff-bound Fribourg-Gottéron. Kevin David O’Neil scored the only goal in the shootout after regulation and overtime failed to separate the teams.
Phillip Louis Schultz set up Emil Løjborg Kristensen to open the scoring for Herning in the first period. Yannick Rathgeb levelled for Fribourg just before the period ended, scoring on a rebound. Kevin Nicolet put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute, but a Herning goal shortly afterwards was disallowed following an offside challenge.
Mathias Bau Hansen scored twice during a double-minor penalty to Rathgeb late in the second period, first tying the game and then restoring Herning’s lead. Fribourg equalised early in the third on the powerplay, with Anthony Richard finishing a pass from Michael Kapla. The score remained 3-3 through the rest of regulation and overtime, leaving the shootout to decide the game.
